Indolebutyric acid is a plant growth regulator and a synthetic auxin analog. Plant growth regulators primarily include auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, abscisic acid, and ethylene.

A. Chemical Properties:

The molecular structure of indolebutyric acid is similar to that of the natural auxin indoleacetic acid, with a benzene ring and a carboxyl group, mimicking the physiological functions of natural auxins. It is chemically more stable than indoleacetic acid and is not easily oxidized and decomposed within the plant body.

B. Mechanism of Action:

Indolebutyric acid exerts its effects by regulating plant cell division and elongation. Upon binding to auxin receptors within the plant body, it activates related gene expression, promoting cell wall relaxation and protein synthesis. Its effective concentration range is relatively narrow, requiring strict control of dosage.

C. Applications:

It is primarily used in agricultural production processes, such as promoting rooting of cuttings, increasing fruit set, and preventing fruit drop. Compared to natural auxins, indolebutyric acid is less mobile within the plant body and is often used for localized treatments, where it is less likely to cause systemic effects.

D. Effect Characteristics:

Indolebutyric acid induces numerous and high-quality adventitious roots, but its onset is slower. Its effects last longer than indoleacetic acid and its degradation rate in plant tissues is slower, making it suitable for cultivation scenarios requiring sustained action.

E. Usage Differences:

Compared to natural auxins, synthetic indolebutyric acid is more active and specific, and is not rapidly degraded by plant enzymes. When used as a growth regulator, careful concentration control is crucial to avoid phytotoxicity such as abnormal growth.

In agricultural production, it is recommended to select an appropriate concentration of indolebutyric acid solution based on the crop type and growth stage, using either a soaking or application method. A small-scale test should be conducted before use, and application should be avoided under high temperatures and strong light conditions. Carefully combine with other plant growth regulators to establish a comprehensive crop growth regulation plan. Applicators should also be kept clean to prevent residue that could affect subsequent use.
